In “The Apple Tree”, Mira Lobe describes the life of an apple tree throughout the year. The first blossoms appear in spring, the leaves sprout vigorously in summer. In autumn, the apples ripen on its branches and in winter it loses all its ornamentation. The apple tree, which stands between cherry and plum trees in an orchard, is characterised by great hospitality. When an animal is looking for a place to stay, the apple tree always offers a place of retreat and security.
In her book, Mira Lobe traces how the apple tree is in harmony with the animals that come to it. It offers them shelter and food and the animals return their affection. It shows how a single tree can be a habitat for many, many different animals: The butterflies and bees buzz to it, the robins and goldfinches, the great tits and dormice, the hedgehogs and the moles.
Angelika Kaufmann has translated Lobe’s text into her pictures in a colourful and calm manner. Kaufmann playfully shows how the many animal families find their home in the apple tree. Their colours change over the course of the year and become more and more colourful.
G&G Verlag kindly provides all readers with a reading of the book in the form of an audio file. A sound (a page turn) marks where a new book page begins. This allows children to follow the pictures with the recording alone. This is also a wonderful way for children to practise their first reading. (Click here for the German audio file.)
Mira Lobe’s “Apple Tree” is a timeless classic that teaches children in kindergarten and primary school about the seasons and the calendar. At the same time, it shows that a tree does not just stand alone, but also provides a habitat for countless animals. It is therefore also a children’s book about the benefits of community and the happiness of giving others a home.
Mira Lube’s “The Apple Tree” is available as a hardback book from Amazon, Genialokal and Orell Füssli.
