With his aesthetic power, he designs each letter and encourages even very young children to understand and play with the letters. Munari’s ABC is not just a powerful, colourful illustration of the alphabet, Munari tells stories. The letters and pictures stand for themselves and tell a story: Here comes the gorgeous blue butterfly (B for “butterfly”), which is so stunning that it takes up the whole page and pushes the banana and the book to the edge. Here is the newspaper (N for “newspaper”), which has been stuck in a tree by someone. Who was it? And why? Here is the present lying in the grass, hidden by the person with the big black glasses.
At the same time, these stories are woven together by a little fly that undertakes its journey through the world of letters. It crawls and flies, saves itself from the hammer (H), buzzes around the fish (F) and pounces on the ice cream (I for “icecream”).
Munari playfully introduces children to the world of letters and their magic: Here you can immerse yourself and let off steam. Tell stories, invent words, go on journeys. Munari shows what letters really are: A colourful, brightly coloured game with which you can conquer the world if you understand it.
The book is published in English, but there are translations into other languages (including German and Italian). It is therefore also ideal as an introduction to English.

The German lamp architect and artist Ingo Maurer has created a dreamlike light installation with Munari’s children’s book by designing a special edition of his famous “Zettel’z” lamp with pictures from Munari’s “ABC”. A tribute to the Italian artist and a wonderful eye-catcher in the children’s room.
